5. Zero trust becomes mainstream
There has been a lot of hype around zero trust for a few years now, but it’s starting to come to maturity as people understand and start to apply the framework. Is 2020 the year that zero trust will establish itself as a mainstream technology?
Gaining mainstream traction
Zero trust is an alternative architecture for IT security, introduced as a concept by analysts, Forrester Research, back in 2010. In 2019 we saw this architecture move away from the fringes and gain traction into the mainstream. This trend should continue this year.
Trust frameworks are moving into a discussion around how we should be architecting this. As we go through a digital transformation, do we need just a firewall, or do we need more data protection and identity access management?
I believe these conversations are happening, and we are seeing growth in our newer vendors and some of the acquisitions made by our vendors.
Vendors leading the charge
Operating without trust is still a new idea to many people on the technical and user side of the house. But we see vendors such as Palo Alto Networks, Cisco, Okta, Ping Idenity, OneLogin, Illumio and Idaptive leading the charge into this space.
It may still be 3-4 years before it really becomes a mainstream architecture for digital transformation initiatives.
We will still have traditional preventative security, but as identity becomes the main concern for cloud solutions, zero trust is moving very rapidly into a new phase.
